A while back, hubby calls me on his way home from work, to let me know that he and a few guys from work were going to be swinging by the local arena, as they were hosting a Big Blowout Sale and rumour had it, they had cheap golf clubs. You know what sale I'm talking about - it comes a few times a year, takes over the arena with its warehouse/refurbished kinda-feels-like-a-garage sale sale.
Well, he comes bursting through the door all excited - not with golf clubs, but with a Food Dehydrator (he is a man after my own heart)! Our first idea was Banana Chips - seems easy right? (Okay, his first idea was jerky, but banana chips was a second).
I bought 6 lbs of bananas - it cost $1.67 total - and hubby sliced most of them up and laid them out on the dehydrator trays. No recipe, because when we buy banana chips - it's just dried up banana right?
16 hours later - they were done. The chips could have been done sooner - but I decided to peek in on them, and they were done.
As I was removing them from the trays, it was a little tedious, as each slice was stuck ever-so-lightly to the tray. A few broke, but 99% came off in one piece.
Now here is the weird thing - once they were cooled and stored, the un-crunchied. They were crunchy while I was taking them out, but within minutes, they sort of became leathery. Like a banana fruit roll up. It doesn't make any sense. Hubby and I guessed and wondered, as we ate our way through the banana chip roll ups slices.
A few weeks later I happen to be at the Bulk Barn, and decided to buy some banana chips - for comparison. Of course they were buttery and crispy - like a banana chip should be. But what surprised me was the ingredients: Bananas, Sugar, Coconut Oil. Say what?!?!?!
We will attempt these again, and I will confess, I haven't googled it yet, but I'm sure I will. It was a little bit of an eye opener to think that without really looking, its easy to assume the ingredients to some foods you've always thought as pure - really isn't.
